Registering and maintaining a domain name requires that it is connected to a service that includes name servers (DNS). A domain name is valid for 1, 3, or 5 years. Renewal is not included in the original agreement, but you can easily renew the domain one month before expiration using our automated system, which sends reminder messages at regular intervals.
For international .com/.net/.org domains, the transfer usually takes at least 5 days and in optimal situations about a week. The transfer will not succeed if the current administrator does not approve it during the five-day transfer period. The transfer requires a domain transfer key (EPP Auth Code) and the transfer lock must be removed.
FI domains usually transfer within one day through the receiving registrar. The transfer requires a transfer key obtained from the previous registrar.
Using the EPP interface, you can obtain the transfer key yourself via the customer page for international domains and .fi domains.

It is the responsibility of the .fi domain user to check the name and trademark registers to ensure there are no obstacles to registering the domain. A .fi domain can include special Finnish characters such as å, ä, and ö, which differ from the standard Latin alphabet. Most software converts these characters into a format understood by DNS systems, but not all programs and keyboards support national characters. Therefore, domains containing national characters are generally not recommended as a primary choice.
Allowed characters in a .fi domain are letters a–z, numbers 0-9, hyphens, and the following national characters:
á, â, ä, å, č, ď, ğ, ǧ, ǩ, ŋ, õ, ö, š, ţ, ž, ȥ, ǯ
A .fi domain cannot begin or end with a hyphen. It cannot start with the prefix xn--. The ACE (ASCII Compatible Encoding) form of a domain containing national characters always starts with xn--.
Rights to Domains with National Characters
Having a .fi domain does not give priority to a similar domain containing national characters (å, ä, ö); the first applicant in chronological order will receive it.
A protected name or trademark exactly matching a domain with national characters can be considered both with and without national characters.
For example, a protected name or mark ÅÄÖ would apply to both åäö.fi and aao.fi, whereas a name AAO would only apply to aao.fi.

Domains are always defined in punycode format in the DNS. For example, the domain viestintävirasto.fi in punycode is xn--viestintvirasto-7kb.fi.

1. Request your current provider to unlock the domain.
2. Obtain the domain transfer key and ensure the current provider approves the transfer.
3. Place a transfer order with Nida Verkkopalvelu. You will need the transfer key and must select a suitable service package. Temporary credentials will be provided for service access.
4. Once the transfer order is completed, we initiate the transfer with the provided key. Your current provider must approve the request.
5. Transfers usually complete in 2–5 days, depending on the current provider’s processing time.
6. Transfer keys can be obtained via the customer portal or requested from our support team.
The validity of a new domain is always 12 months. A domain can be renewed for 1–5 years at a time, depending on the domain.
If payment is made through Nida Verkkopalvelu’s customer panel with the current payment card, the domain validity is automatically extended.
The content and usage of domains are governed by various laws, regulations, and standards. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and many domain registries have established rules applicable to all domain users.

Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) is an extension defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) that protects certain information provided by the DNS in IP networks. It provides data origin authentication, data integrity, and protection against certain attacks but does not guarantee availability or privacy.
DNSSEC works by digitally signing DNS records using public key cryptography. The correct DNSKEY record is validated through a chain of trust starting from trusted public keys at the DNS root zone.
